Watch a Mums and Bubs yoga class

Yoga is a wonderful way of looking after yourself after the birth of your baby.  Since 2000 yogababy classes have recognised the need for parents and babies to stay connected in the early phase of parenting.  The classes include the yogababy program, a sequence of special activities to bond with your baby, yoga for you, and time to connect with other mothers. Start when your baby is 8 weeks to actively crawling.

How yoga helps you and your baby

Be stronger and release tension

Our classes are specifically designed for the postnatal months to help your body regain strength and tone in a safe and effective way. The emphasis is on strengthening the pelvic floor, the abdomen, legs, and back as well as on opening and relaxing tensions in the shoulders, neck, and arms.

Finding emotional balance

Yoga relaxes the nervous system and brings balance to the endocrine system (hormonal balance).  It helps to create a balance between your body's physical needs and your emotional state. The yoga taught in these classes is gentle and slow, giving you time to integrate the experiences of your body after birth.

Baby bonding time

While many exercise classes focus only on the parent, yogababy has led the way in placing the baby in the center of the experience, thereby helping the attachment between carer and baby blossom. Join us to experience the Yogababy program specifically designed to help your baby to grow and flourish.

Meet other mums

These classes are baby centred so you can attend to your baby's needs either by feeding, changing, holding, or generally reassuring them in your presence. With the support of others, you will be able to develop a balance between doing yoga for yourself and meeting the needs of your baby. Meet other like-minded mums.

What is the Yogababy program?
(for babies 8 weeks to actively crawling)

The Yogababy program is a special sequence of movements for your baby that assists in their postural development from lying to walking. We recognise that your baby needs to strengthen its muscular abilities and nervous system.

The lack of physical exercise for a baby due to prams, car seats, etc will have the same effects as for an adult - poor digestion, constipation, emotional agitation, poor circulation, and laziness.

Your baby's physical development requires times of unfettered energy expression and times of peaceful stillness. In the yogababy program, both these needs are met.

“I have just done my first video class with our beautiful 3-month-old Francesca, she was alert and enjoyed the baby yoga and then slept after Suzanne’s cue to complete some tummy time. I had a lovely time doing some yoga for me and Frankie slipped straight into an afternoon nap so naturally!”— Madelaine

Mums and Bubs Yoga FAQs

Can I do a trial class?

We do not offer trial classes into our mums and bubs yoga classes. You need to attend more than a single class to see if the sessions suit you and you baby. In addition, the women who attend the courses get to know each other to build a supportive group which is also very rewarding

What do I bring to a mums & bubs yoga class?

Your own yoga mat is useful. We have a supply of mats and yoga equipment you can use. Bring a rug/blanket for your baby to lie on, bottle of water and change bag. Avoid bringing a pram as there is not much room, use a baby carrier if possible. Please arrive 10 mins early to chat to your teacher and other mums.

Can I claim health rebates?

Services such as Yoga and Childbirth Education are not covered by government subsidies. Hence, health funds no longer provide rebates for yoga classes.

My baby is 12 weeks old, can we start now?

Yes, for babies 12 week old gentle movements based on relaxation are beneficial. Arm and leg movements prepare your baby for rolling over. Relaxation is important as your baby’s body is very stiff, with arms and legs bent, and fists clenched; after the yogababy sequence your baby’s limbs will loosen up and your baby will sleep better. Your baby may not do all of the yogababy sequence which is perfectly fine. You can do yoga for yourself when your baby is sleeping or resting.

I haven’t done yoga before, are the classes suitable for me?

It is not necessary to have previous yoga experience to attend our Mums and Bubs yoga classes. For many women it may be the first time they have practiced yoga. Our classes cater for all levels of yoga students from beginners to advanced.  Our teachers are very experienced and qualified, and they will offer different levels of yoga poses in relevant situations.

The classes are, obviously, structured for a woman in the postnatal period (< 6 months) and therefore the poses are quite specific and gentle.  You don't need to have any previous yoga experience to enjoy the classes and you should feel the benefits for you and your baby within the first few classes.

What happens in the class?

During the mums and bubs class, you will practise classical yoga postures and bond with your baby. You will begin with the yogababy program for your baby and then continue on to do postnatal yoga for you. This is followed by singing and time for you and your baby to socialise with others.

What if I can’t attend my yoga class?

If you are unable to attend for any reason, you can send us an email to request access to a pre-recorded Yogababy class with Suzanne Swan to practice during over a week.

What is the cancellation policy?

It is important that you understand that yogababy cannot be responsible for providing additional make‐ups or issuing any credit for classes missed because of scheduling conflicts, vacations, illness, emergencies, or other circumstances beyond your control. Classes that are not used by the end of the course are forfeited. If you withdraw fully from the course before commencement of the first class a 50% cancellation fee applies.
